2. Kaulayaw Coffee
Source: Lemi
Antipolo, known for its stunning views, boasts various restaurants and cafes, including Kaulayaw Coffee. Positioned along the picturesque Antipolo Ridge, Kaulayaw Café has quickly become a sought-after dining spot specializing in locally sourced coffee. Given the pandemic, individuals prefer open-air dining venues with natural vistas over enclosed mall-based restaurants.
The term “Kaulayaw” translates to “close companion,” this café offers a relaxing space where visitors can enjoy a cup of coffee or sample local craft beer during their road trips. With its open-air dining area on the third floor, guests are treated to breathtaking views of Rizal’s verdant landscapes and the bustling skyline of Metro Manila.
Located alongside Sumulong Highway in Antipolo City, Kaulayaw Café stands adjacent to the soon-to-be-opened Starbucks The Ridge branch. However, the prospect of its opening raises concerns about potential traffic congestion in the area.
A small business operates this homegrown café to support local entrepreneurs and farmers. Its well-designed interiors exude a charm reminiscent of the establishments commonly found in Baguio or Tagaytay.
Visitors can pair the magnificent view with ethically sourced, locally grown coffee. Kaulayaw Café proudly serves coffee made from regional beans like Sagada, Benguet, and their signature blend, aptly named Kaulayaw. Furthermore, the café offers coffee pouches and various coffee accessories for takeout.
For those dining in, the menu at Kaulayaw Café predominantly features morning specials (such as suman, cheese rolls, and ensaymada), toasts, pancakes, sandwiches, rice bowls, and pasta dishes, ideal for breakfast, brunch, or light snacks from morning to early afternoon.
Notably, Kaulayaw Café goes beyond the traditional Filipino breakfast joints by offering international dishes rarely found elsewhere. Highlights include Kaya Toast with a soft-boiled egg (P159), Herb Avocado Toast topped with Egg, Dill, and Tomatoes (P289), Roti Pancake with Banana (P159), Okonomiyaki (P189), and Salmon Pasta with Tomato Cream Sauce (P249).
While the menu remains somewhat limited, and some non-pork items were unfortunately sold out during our visit, the chicken satay dish impressed us, and the overall ambiance of the café was delightful. Despite the challenges posed by the pandemic, Kaulayaw Café is increasingly gaining popularity as individuals eagerly seek new places near the city to escape the confines of their homes.
Contrary to our initial perception of solely serving coffee, Kaulayaw Café pleasantly surprised us by including a selection of local craft beers. Offerings such as Nipa Brew, Crazy Carabao, and Alcalde Brewery (established in 2020) from Cainta are available. Remarkably, these craft beers are reasonably priced, ranging from P148 to P178 per bottle. This is quite fair compared to the inflated prices commonly observed in more touristy areas of Manila and Makati, where a serving can easily surpass P250.
3. Bag of Beans
Source: A Not So Popular Kid
Bag of Beans, located in Tagaytay’s cool and breezy city, is a must-visit destination for many. Whether you’re a tourist or a local, you’ll find joy in their freshly made pastries, delicious breakfast options, and robust coffee, especially when enjoyed in Tagaytay’s chilly weather.
Established in 2000 as a family-owned venture, Bag of Beans offers a serene atmosphere reminiscent of a secret garden. Initially, their menu focused on freshly baked pastries, piping-hot barako coffee, and the unique Alamid coffee made from civet cat droppings (a taste you shouldn’t dismiss without trying!).
Due to its cozy ambiance and affordable yet delectable bread, Bag of Beans quickly gained popularity, leading to long queues of eager customers. In response to the high demand for coffee and baked goods, the small café expanded, opening additional branches. These branches also introduced delicious breakfast and lunch dishes, catering to those seeking heartier options during their Tagaytay visit.
Despite their expansion, Bag of Beans remains committed to using the freshest ingredients and maintaining the same level of care and attention to detail that contributed to their success over the past two decades. It’s this dedication that continues to draw customers and fill their tables.
When planning your visit to this Tagaytay favorite, one highly recommended dish is their popular Shepherd’s pie. This hearty dish features layers of savory ground meat and creamy mashed potatoes, making it a satisfying main course or a delightful appetizer to share with someone.
The Roast Beef is a must-try. Served with gravy, vegetable medley, and mashed potatoes, it promises a satisfying dining experience. Suppose you want to share a tasty treat. In that case, their 18″ brick-oven pizzas are a must-have with the option to choose two flavors in one hand-tossed pie, picking between enticing options like Quattro Formagi, Hawaiian, Shrimp Alfredo, Garden Fresh Pizza, Philly Cheese Steak, and Supreme Special.
